Cypress
County’s Citizen of the Year didn’t see it coming.
Emmy Reesor has been volunteering with the Walsh Community
Association as treasurer for more years than she can remember. When
she was invited to the Cypress County volunteer appreciation night,
she thought she was just there for supper.
“Nobody said anything and nobody let on,” she said. “A person
doesn’t feel they should be given something for volunteering. So, I
was shocked.
“Everybody knew except me.”
She said when they started to read about the volunteer of the year
and then announced her name.
“All the people from the Walsh area were there and they were just
staring at me. . . I just thought it was somebody else and not me.
I was just going for supper.”
Although she’s not entirely sure who nominated her, Reesor said she
thinks it was probably Paulette Heller or Wayne Brost, two people
who have also served on the Walsh Community Association board for
many years.
She and her husband, Shane, have two children, Rob and Jolene.
Rob and his wife, Gina, brought her granddaughter Kiara, and Jolene
and her husband, Curtis Winquist came as well.
“They’re very proud,” she said. “They were all there and it never
even dawned on me that I was nominated. . . It was overwhelming.”
Reesor said she’s got her family involved in some of the
projects she helps organize at the Walsh Community Hall. They help
decorate and prepare food.
“If I ever get stuck I’ll always ask the kids,” she said.
As to how she got started on the board, Reesor said she can’t even
remember how she got started being treasurer, they just needed
someone and she took it on.
When asked if she plans to keep serving as treasurer or if she
would like to hand the reins over to someone else, Reesor said
she’d love to let someone else take the job but no one will take
it.
“Nobody else wants to come,” she said. “It’s nothing difficult.”
