A Bit of History

Elkwater Provincial Park was formed in 1929, largely due to the popularity the area had among many local residents.  Originally it included only three square miles along the the lake  shore.  A small village started to develop as people began building summer cottages.  It was in 1951 that a total area of 78 square miles, including the town site, was designated as Cypress Hills Provincial Park.
