Eleven bells tolled from the City Hall clock in Medicine Hat as two minutes of silence began; thoughts of freedom, war and those who gave their lives weighed on most peoples' minds.

More than 2,000 people of all ages gathered at Riverside Park Sunday to remember the brave soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom.

Annetta Lozo, poppy chair for the Royal Canadian Legion, was in charge of laying wreaths during the ceremony.

She said among the hundreds of people who marched into the park to surround the cenotaph included Legionnaires, Shriners, Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Knights of Columbus, Royal Purple, Elks, Navy League, cadets, scouts, guides and more.

"I don't think people who weren't over there fighting in these wars can comprehend what went on," said Lozo. "People who've never had war on their own soil or been in battle can only try to imagine what it was like."
