Westar Landfill Fire
Update December 9 11:00 am
During the extreme cold weather of Friday and Saturday, all stationary monitors were not operational. Stationary monitors (EBAMs - Electronic Beta Attenuation Monitors) are rated for -25C. Continuous monitoring of fine particulate matter resumed on Sunday December 8 and confirmed that the ambient air posed a low health risk. The MAML (Mobile Air Monitoring Lab) was also not operated because of the frigid temperatures.
The frigid temperatures of December 6 & 7 made firefighting not possible – the water was freezing too fast, equipment was icing up and there was risk that the supplied airlines to the heavy equipment would freeze. Keeping staff warm and safe while working in -30o C temperatures was too much of a challenge.
Firefighting resumed by noon on Sunday December 8 and is continuing today.
The information centre contact number is 403.525.2333 and it is being answered 24 hours a day
